Pre-built Binaries

Pick your platform. Every release is built from the tagged source in the repository, with a checksum file published alongside the artifacts.

Linux (x86_64)

.deb · .rpm · tarball

Windows (x86_64)

.exe installer · .msi

Verify what you downloaded: SHA256SUMS is published with every release. Installing on Linux: sudo dpkg -i Umbra_<version>_amd64.deb on Debian/Ubuntu, sudo rpm -i Umbra-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm on Fedora/openSUSE, or unpack the tarball anywhere and run ./umbra. On Windows, run the .exe installer or the .msi.

Build from Source

Umbra is free and open source. Clone the repository, install the frontend dependencies, and build the Rust backend.

Umbra is its own browser — Tauri v2 + WebKitGTK on Linux, WebView2 on Windows, not a Firefox/LibreWolf or Chromium fork — so there is no browser tree to compile. Building it takes a Rust toolchain and a SvelteKit frontend, nothing more.

Prerequisites: the Rust toolchain (1.77+), Node 18+/npm, and on Linux the WebKitGTK build dependencies (libwebkit2gtk-4.1-dev, build-essential, libxdo-dev, libssl-dev, libayatana-appindicator3-dev, librsvg2-dev).

Quick start:

git clone https://github.com/abysssoftware-dev/umbra-browser.git
cd umbra-browser
npm --prefix umbra/ui install
cd umbra/src-tauri
cargo build --release
Want live reload while hacking on it? Install the Tauri CLI (@tauri-apps/cli or cargo install tauri-cli) and run cargo tauri dev from umbra/src-tauri; cargo tauri build produces a production bundle.
